Daily Kos reports:
Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer says he and his colleagues are perfectly fine with blocking a Supreme Court nominee from popular vote loser Donald Trump. After all, as Republicans have proven, an eight-member court can function if it has to.
This isn’t that surprising. Republican refused to even consider Obama’s nomination for 9 months. It’s unexpected that Democrats would retaliate in the same way, but it’s fair. You’d can’t fight a party that doesn’t play by the rules with principles.
Asked if he would do his best to hold the seat open, Schumer responded, “Absolutely.” […]
Schumer said Democrats are going to push for a “mainstream” nominee. He noted that Supreme Court nominees are subject to a filibuster, meaning 60 votes are necessary to end debate on the nomination. Republicans hold 52 seats in the new Congress, meaning some Democrats would have to back Trump’s pick for the nomination to move forward.
Garland is a mainstream moderate Republican nominee. Trump needs all the luck he can get to nominate his Scalia2 replacement.
To which Majority Leader Mitch McConnell took unbelievably hypocritical umbrage: “The American people simply will not tolerate” Democrats blocking Trump’s SCOTUS nominee, he says. There’s an awful lot of competition for worst person in the world, but Mitch has to be in the top five.
McConnell’s hypocrisy is astounding. Republicans blocked Obama’s nomination of Garland for over 9 long months. To then complain that the Democrats are considering a similar strategy is unbelievable. Republicans forced the people to tolerate them doing it for near a year. I’m sure the Democrats can get away with it easily.
Republicans blocked a centre-right nominee. A man who everyone, Democrats and Republicans should be able to compromise on. Democrats want to block an ultra conservative right winger. I could understand if the Republicans were blocking someone like Bernie Sanders, but they weren’t. For that same reason, I can understand and support the Democrats blocking a Ted Cruz clone.
McConnell is a joke.
